summer time at royal botanic gardens victoria's cranbourne and melbourne gardens

Summer is a wonderful time to go and explore Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’s Cranbourne and Melbourne Gardens. Not only are there the beautiful gardens, the playgrounds and dozens of trails to explore, but there will also be a buzz of excitement with school holiday activities happening at both of these stunning family friendly destinations.

MELBOURNE GARDENS

Botanica: A Village Among the Oak Trees FREE, Wednesday 15 January – Saturday 18 January, 2020. 10am – 2pm, drop in anytime. (Quiet Session Tuesday 14 January 2pm). In this interactive, family activity, you and your crew will work together to build cubbies and craft creatures in a village on Oak Lawn. Have fun in the mud kitchen then chill out with lemon myrtle tea, bean bags and books.

CRANBOURNE GARDENS

Kids Explorer $10 Adult, $8 Concession, Children FREE in the school holidays* Thursday 2 January – Tuesday 28 January 10am – 4pm (25 mins). During the January school holidays, The Explorer mini-bus transforms into the Kids Explorer and children ride for free! Cruise through the Australian Garden and experience its wonders through sight, sound and smell on this special tour designed for a child’s view. On the way they can roar like a dinosaur and discover cool facts about plants and animals, look out and listen for birds, bees or their favourite flowers. Each child receives an activity sheet too.

Summer Nature Play FREE, every Tuesday in January 2020, 10am – 1pm, drop in anytime. We love exploring the Gardens in summer, especially under the shade of the trees. Join the gang in the Kids’ Backyard, as we explore trees, create animal habitats with natural materials and clay, and use magnifying glasses to look at bird nests. Listen to stories about the animals at Cranbourne Gardens and explore the diversity in tree trunks through bark and leaf rubbings. Finish of the session by dedicating a special message to your favourite tree.

Ian Potter Lakeside Picnic Area FREE, daily, 10am – 4.30pm. Enjoy the outdoors at the Lakeside picnic area with the entire family and challenge one another to lawn games like Giant Jenga and Tic Tac Toe. The area is fitted with market umbrellas, chairs, tables and bean bags - so pack a picnic or grab something from the cafes for a great lunch.
