flora and fauna reserve, langwarrin

Not only is this reserve spectacularly stunning, home to hundreds of indigenous flora and fauna species, but it is also steeped in great military history, spanning almost 100 years.

In 1886 the land was the Langwarrin Military Reserve and used by the Victorian Defence Force Volunteers for various military activities. There are still a few remnants from this time - such a hospital used for World War one soldiers, rifle butts and a reservoir. If you follow the Historical Trail - you will see these sights.

There are numerous walking trails throughout the reserve, each one taking you through some lush vegetation - giant Eucalypts and Stringybarks, and ferns and woodland areas.

The treat for the kids at this beautiful reserve are the hidden huts - or ‘dragon nests’. If you follow the main trail - the Centre Break trail - and take the first dirt path on your right, you will uncover these majestic beauties! Mamma’s kids spent hours exploring these and coming up with ideas on how they were formed and by whom! They especially loved the giant hut, that had logs to sit on around a campfire set up! They were so impressed they tried to build their own.

This is a great place for exercise, being immersed in history and for good old-fashioned imaginative play! Also - keep your eyes out for the scavenger hunt items - listed on the entry gate!

Beware of snakes here of course, as you are in their habitat.

Mamma's special mention: Keep the fun going at the cute playground Bayport Reserve, Langwarrin not far away.
